TIME FOR SOCCER –
SOLAR POWER FOR GANSBAAI
SolarWorld AG equips “Dibanisa” soccer school with Sun-TV station
“Directly converted. We turn sunlight into power” – this slogan used by German national team player Lukas Podolski to advertise the solar technology group SolarWorld shows how simple solar power works. And this clean form of energy is giving South African children and teenagers in Gansbaai media access to the largest sports event to date in the history of their country, the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup.
SolarWorld AG is supporting the construction of the soccer school and is equipping it with a free Sun TV station. The Sun TV station is connected to the classroom next to the planned small-size soccer field. The SolarWorld solar modules on the roof supply the power. This way, youngsters in Gansbaai get access to television broadcasts and modern media reports.
The company wants to give the South African people a chance to follow the 2010 Soccer World Cup via community viewing by installing a large number of Sun TV stations in the run-up to the World Cup. Many South Africans would otherwise not have a chance to see the games live, due to high admission fees and large distances. The main target areas for SolarWorld Sun TVs are rural regions without regular power supply and densely populated suburbs.
The stations, which are sponsored and installed by SolarWorld, include solar modules, batteries, and charge controllers for power supply, as well as a TV set with a DVD player and a satellite receiver. This media station is aimed not only at promoting community viewing, but also education, social integration, and environmental responsibility.
“Football makes the barriers between people disappear. We want to support this with our Sun TVs for the soccer-crazed African South,” says Gregor Küpper, head of the SolarWorld subsidiary SolarWorld Africa (Pty.) Ltd. “The same goes for providing access to education channels that help improve young people’s chances at personal development. This applies to South Africa as well as to the rest of the world.”
