With its traditional support base in the African community, football is the most widely played sport in South Africa. For many citizens the country’s proudest sporting moment came when “Bafana Bafana” won the African Cup of Nations on home turf in 1996.
Football is passionately followed, and the quality of the local game is constantly improving, as demonstrated by the increasing number of South African players among the European clubs.
There’s no quicker way to “break the ice” or make friends with the South African man on the street, than to demonstrate some knowledge of local football.
South Africa successfully hosted the FIFA 2010 World Cup™ and it was the biggest football event that Africa had ever experienced. It encouraged unity and the desire to show the world what Africa is capable of achieving.
