Since its first democratic elections in 1994, South Africa is looked to as a shining example of democratic transition.
With a large youth population, unemployment has emerged as a major developmental challenge for a post –apartheid South Africa. Youths between the ages of 15 and 34 account for 16.3 million individuals. This point is critical, as it is a powerful reflection of the significant over-representation of unemployed youth. Of the close to 8 million unemployed people in the South African labor market; just over 5.5 million of these individuals are youth.
Challenges
We must acknowledge the very real and painful challenges facing South Africa and its youth, which are:
- Unemployment
- Crime
- HIV/Aids
