Dibanisa Lesson 2:
BEACH CLEAN UP on 19th May 2011!
On the 19th May, the Dibanisa children joined Brenda Walters from the Deyer Island Conservation Trust for a talk about the effects of pollution and waste on the marine life. The aim of the lesson was to demonstrate how to combat this, by keeping the beaches and communities litter free, as well as the importance of recycling unused goods.
All of the students participated in a beach clean-up, which took place in front of the Strandveld Museum in Franskraal. The children collected rubbish from beach, separating the old fishing line from the other rubbish (cans, glass & plastic bottles, plastic packets, sweet papers, etc.). They were also taught to document the rubbish for the use of the Ocean Conservancy as part of their International Coastal Cleanup programme.
Dibanisa Lesson 3:
GREEN FUTURES on 20th May 2011!
On the 20th of May, the Dibanisa joined the Green Futures team to learn more about plants and their importance in our lives. The children were told more about Fynbos and the different components which make up Fynbos (Proteas, Erica & Restios) while walking through the Milkwood forest. Each of the children were given the opportunity to plant their own Plectranthus plant that they could take home. As well as a visit of different types of gardens showed them how to use different components (natural, manmade and recycled) to create gardens.
At the end the students used the nature elements which they collected (twigs, soil, leaves etc) to make up their mobiles, which they combined with pictures of fynbos and animals found in fynbos.
Dibanisa would like to thank everyone involved for making the Dibanisa group feel welcome! We look forward to our next lesson, which will be a visit to Growing the Future!
